Jim served as an Illustrator-Draftsman in the Navy aboard the USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault aircraft carrier with duties as an all around naval artist working on just anything pertaining to art. It taught him how to produce a wide range of artistic projects under less than ideal conditions when out to sea or in third world countries for long periods of time. This was in addition to his responsibilities as a sailor-warrior on a US Naval man-of-war ship. (note: Sailors can shed their uniform shirts onboard ship while deployed in equatorial regions)
